When the Covid-19 pandemic hit the US, I found myself without a job and like many of us, under a stay at home order.
Given the suddenly fragile state of the economy, increased social tensions, disrupted supply chains and food sources, I felt like it was exactly the right moment to set off in a new direction.
And so, rather than look for a job, I started a garden.
As the garden began to bear fruit, I started to wonder what our world would look like if half of the homeowners in our neighborhoods each started a small garden or planted a tree that bore fruits or nuts. What if the dogwood tree was replaced with a pear tree? They are both aesthetically pleasing but one produces food and the other does not. What if we made more of our yards edible? What if neighbors sold, traded, or simply gave away the excess harvest? How would that transform our lives?
Did you know that after WWII, 50% of the 40 million households in the US had gardens and those gardens accounted for 40% of all the produce consumed in the country? That’s astounding!
Can you imagine a world where you know exactly where your food was grown because you picked it yourself? What if medicinal herb gardens popped up and were shared by everyone in the community? What if we relearned what our ancestors knew and reintroduced those principles and practices into our modern world?
I want to find out and I am hoping that you will join me!
Yard and Table is here to educate and inspire small changes with the power to transform our lives, our communities, and the planet. And it begins right outside your door!
It’s easy and we can get started by simply taking a walk around your yard and talking about the best spot(s) for a garden and what you like to eat!
My hope is that I leave you equipped with the tools to get started and inspired to start a garden or plant a tree…even a very small one!
